Programs

SAGE Organization utilizes an integrated approach in its scope of intervention and implementation of its programs which try to address prevailing social problems and needs. SAGE’s interventions and activities focus in the following areas.

(i) Operational Research

Aimed at highlighting and enhancing focus on the situation in vulnerable groups in Somalia other than the under five year old boys and girls who are extensively covered by partners programmes. Our concentration in this area is based on the fact that evidence based information acquired through research is essential for decision making. To-date, with financial support from the Common Humanitarian Fund (CHF), we have undertaken research studies as highlighted below and provided feedback to the nutrition cluster membership to enhance response:-

Nutritional Causal Analysis (NCA) – In three rural livelihood zones in North Gedo region and two settlements for internally displaced persons in North east Somalia (Puntland). The purpose of the NCA studies is to help partners in North Gedo, and Puntland, establish and address the core drivers of acute malnutrition In the area. This is particularly important considering that acute malnutrition persists despite years of humanitarian response. The findings of the studies indicate varied core determinants of acute malnutrition across the livelihood zones and calls for an integrated approach to
address them. The findings have been shared with the Nutrition partners and local authorities in Dolo and Nairobi since 2014 and disseminated in Mogadishu and Garowe nutrition cluster meetings in the same year.

Geriatric nutrition studies (GNS) – Sage Organization conducted three nutrition studies in North Gedo in 2013 whose primary focus was to establish the nutrition status of older men and women (aged 60 and above). Findings from these studies indicated that older persons are equally or more affected with acute malnutrition in comparison to the under five year old. This is because in situations where household resources are scarce, children aged below five years are given priority in feeding over the older persons. Evidence gathered through these studies therefore suggests that targeting of households, rather than of individual malnourished children, is important in addressing acute malnutrition. These findings have been shared with the Nutrition cluster for re-planning purposes.

(ii) Capacity Building (Training and Mentoring) of Stake-holders

This has been essential for local stakeholders at the forefront of nutrition response, majority of whom have limited trainings following over 20 years of civil unrest and a collapsed state. SAGE have been providing:-
∙ Training of stakeholders in:-
o Project cycle management
o Humanitarian principles
o Research techniques
o organizational leadership
o Sphere Training of Trainers
Mentoring opportunities by involving partners in our trainings and research activities, and working with them. In our research undertaking for example, Sage Organization uses partner staff as survey enumerators to help them gain hands on experience.

(iii) Outreach Programs

SAGE has gone a step ahead in the provision and promotion of primary health services through its outreach programs. These programs are implemented monthly in the IDP population and the host community. SAGE prioritize these program to the IDP population following there deplorable living conditions. During the exercise children, infants, Child Bearing women, pregnant women, are immunized from Diphtheria, measles, polio, tetanus, Vitamin A deficiency among other diseases.

(iv) Humanitarian Programmes

SAGE is an active Health and Nutrition cluster partner with vast experience in emergency and development of Health and Nutrition programmes and strong presence on the ground with good working relationships with the communities and authorities.

(v) Protection of Vulnerable Groups

SAGE also implements Child Protection program within Somalia and Kenya IDP settlements. The program includes documentation of incidences of violations against children especially the Six Major Violations outlined in the UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1523. SAGE is also involved in the treatment of vulnerable women against acts of Violence Against Women (VAW). The child protection program includes Investigation, Documentation, Monitoring, providing care and protection.
